At Clean Coastal Living we use soft washing, a safe, low-pressure roof cleaning method, to remove black stains and streaks from Georgia and South Carolina roofs. This method utilizes a sodium hypochlorite cleaning solution as recommended by the Asphalt Roofing Manufactureres' Association to eliminate the algae that causes the black streaks and discoloration. Our team does this by applying the solution with low pressure to prevent damage and to preserve the integrity of the shingle roofing. This same soft wash method and sodium hypochlorite solution are also effective on all other roof surfaces.

Each roof is unique. The quality and type of roofing material, roof shading, and the directional orientation of the house all influence the rate of algae growth. Given these variables, it is not possible to accurately predict the duration for every roof surface. Nevertheless, we offer a five-year warranty during which our team will re-treat the roof surface upon the initial detection of re-infestation of black algae.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE
of ALGAE GROWTH ON SHINGLES?
Known as gloeocapsa magma - an algae with a black pigment that thrives in our warm, humid Georgia & South Carolina climate.
Humid climates; like what we experience here in St Simons Island, GA and Bluffton, SC, creates the perfect conditions for this kind of algae growth. The most common type, gloeocapsa magma or blue green algae, protects itself from damaging ultraviolet rays by producing a dark pigmented coating. The dark discoloration typically begins as small spots that eventually turn into black streaks. By the time it’s visible, it’s likely been present for several months or longer.
